ISTDP Therapy

What to Expect

ISTDP (Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) is an evidence-based and highly attuned therapeutic approach designed to be rapid and highly effective in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, self-attacking thoughts and behaviors, relational challenges, and chronic somatic conditions in the body. People turn to ISTDP when they feel as though traditional talk therapy is ineffective, or they feel motivated to experience a more structured, intense psychotherapeutic modality known for effective and rapid results.

In ISTDP Therapy, you will have an initial session to see if you are a good candidate for ISTDP. Your therapist will introduce you to the modality and collaboratively work with you to set a healthy goal, while noticing and monitoring emotional responses and protective defenses as they arise in the moment. Powerful techniques will be applied, all within the safety of a strong, loving, and trusting therapeutic relationship, developed over time.

Some clients may provide written consent for their therapist to videotape sessions to review and/or seek supervision post-session. Although this is not mandatory, many clients feel the unique benefits of their therapist’s studying of their body language, anxiety, and emotional defenses outside of their scheduled sessions. The therapist will talk you through this option if it interests you.

The benefits of ISTDP Therapy

ISTDP therapy is an accelerated modality, producing quicker and more effective results.

ISTDP helps uncover deeper feelings, internal conflicts, and protective defenses that may be keeping painful patterns in place. As this process unfolds in the care of a safe and strong therapeutic alliance, clients release old emotions they felt unsafe to feel, increase awareness of their automatic defenses, and decrease or fully eliminate chronic psychosomatic symptoms.

One of the key benefits of ISTDP therapy is that it is highly experiential and reparative, not focused on just insight and awareness. It helps you notice and feel emotions and defenses showing up in real time, within your body, and within your relationships. This method can rapidly lead to reduced anxiety and depression, less emotional avoidance, an increase in joy and emotional freedom, a greater ability to tolerate feelings without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down, and deeper intimacy with yourself and others.
