Self-Esteem Therapy

What to Expect

Self-esteem therapy focuses on understanding how your sense of self has been shaped, and how this has impacted your self-worth. Together, we will explore early relationships with your caregivers, your relationship with shame, impactful life experiences, internalized messages, unhealthy self-narratives, and how you’ve learned to feel worthy of love.

We will work toward letting go of your persistent inner critic and self-attacking voice, difficulties in self-trust, and tendencies to measure your value through achievement, appearance, or other people’s approval. These patterns often develop as adaptations, helping you navigate environments where love, safety, or belonging felt conditional.

In sessions, you and your therapist will explore the origins of these beliefs and how they continue to show up in your inner dialogue and relationships. Together, you’ll work to soften harsh self-judgment, deepen self-awareness, and build a healthy and compassionate sense of self. This process often includes identifying unmet emotional needs, strengthening your voice, and practicing new ways of relating to yourself while moving through the world boldly and authentically.

The benefits of Self-Esteem Therapy

The only permanent relationship you have in this world is the one you have with yourself! The benefits of self-esteem therapy are extensive, transforming how you view yourself, relate to yourself and others, and move through the world with love, joy, confidence, and embodiment.

As your relationship with yourself changes and evolves, many people experience less self-criticism, comparison, the need for external validation, and a decrease in depression and anxiety. Ideally, you will learn to trust your “inner knowing” voice, tolerate imperfection, and move through the world and relationships with a strong sense of security.

Over time, this work can lead to more intimate and authentic relationships, clearer boundaries, decisiveness, career risks, and a deep sense of self-worth, self-value, and self-love. Clients often notice increased confidence, a greater sense of joy and freedom, an easier time self-advocating, a healthier “picker” in friendships and romantic relationships, and a deeper capacity for intimacy and connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

If you doubt your worth and value, rely on external validation to feel good about yourself, stay in unhealthy relationships, feel insecure, or have a self-attacking inner voice, self-esteem therapy may benefit you.

02

Often, people who stay in unhealthy and toxic relationships consciously or unconsciously have lower levels of self-esteem and self-worth. Self-esteem therapy will ideally shift your feelings of security and your self-view, often shifting the relationships you welcome into your life.

03

Like all first sessions, your therapist will focus on creating a strong therapeutic alliance with you, helping you identify your goals, and understanding your current life situation. Your therapist may start asking you questions to understand how you relate to yourself, others, and the world, focusing on early attachment relationships where you learned how to feel loved and valued.

04

Self-esteem therapy can help you develop a stronger sense of self, process attachment trauma, understand your value, shift your inner voice and minimize the need for external validation. It can also lead to healthier relationships with both yourself and others.
